   What was the best compliment you ever received?
   
   I would assume compliments might be phrased the same, yet they won't have the same effect on people.  It all depends, doesn't it?  What is your story?  No matter how ordinary or unimaginative a compliment might have sounded, how did it make you feel and why?

   "You look like Darth Vader, only girly." -- my six-year-old neighbor, impressed by the black cloak I was wearing to give out candy on Halloween last year.
   
   He made me laugh. Also, I think it really WAS a compliment, unfiltered by adult ideas about politeness.

      On Halloween, I was asked "Is that your real hair or wig?"  It was kind of dark, but not that dark.  I had a purple wig on.  "You look like Lady Gaga!"  Not my favourite, but the woman meant it as a compliment.  My son was ECSTATIC! Lady Gaga, Lady .

   A couple things come to mind that have stayed with me.  My husband told me many years ago that if he had it to do over, he would marry me all over again.
   
   And my youngest daughter tells people that I am her best friend.  That makes me feel good.
   
   On the other hand--LOL - my youngest daughter told me when she was preschool age, that when she grew up she wanted to be just like me--except not fat!  Leave to kids to tell you the truth.

      My son used to tell me "Mom, you are fat!"  Without blinking, I would proceed "But am I beautiful?" "Yes, you are".  "Well, that makes me fat and beautiful".  While it is not exactly a compliment, but it is simply unforgettable.

   A friend told me she had never known anyone as comfortable in their own skin as I.  And she is correct too... guess that is why that compliment stood out so strongly.
   
   One more made me feel good too - I was told I had class.  Yip - I'm a Redneck gentleman - so that makes it true - I have class!  LOL

      I agree those compliments - that touch our core - are the best.  Mine is "I've just had an erection!" sounds like an obscenity (or a case of "who cares anyway?!"), but it was the context that made it so memorable!!!

   Not any specific compliment has been the best, but all of those that I get from my boyfriend are the ones that matter most. I never have to have a second thought guessing if they are sincere and I respect his opinion.

   They were actually three:
   one when my husband told me that he could not have found a better spouse, two when my children told me they were lucky that I was their mom and the best of all was from a few difficult students who said I was a great teacher. Like most people I need reassurance so they all made me feel on top of the world.

    Being that told I'm handsome and that I have lovely smile, and yes it was from an equally pretty girl, and not my mom trying to be nice to me hehehe! That same girl also told me that I was a true gentleman and a real prince charming.

    More of a pickup line but here it goes... "walking down Wall street New York city laughing with friends a gentleman decided to stop to do the following "OMG i think i just went blind from your bright personality"  Keep in mind this is NY no holds bard but i looked a the guy and told him he needed help and not the eye type but the mental instead... I did laugh though

    My older brother wrote me an email a few years ago saying, "It's wonderful to have a saint for a little brother." We both came from a family where anger was often out of control. And I've tried hard to master that and become peaceful, supportive, loving, and helpful. (It's more than a full-time job.) So, when my brother saw it, that was a very, very deep healing for me.

    There are a few that stand out in my memory...
    
    When I was in a grocery store and a man told me "I'm not coming on to you, but you're the most beautiful woman I've ever seen. I just felt like I needed to tell you" and then excused himself.
    
    Then there was a guy who I didn't get along with at all. He told my best friend there that if I went in the rain, I'd melt (Wicked Witch of the West style), but that she was lucky to have me as her friend because she couldn't have a better best friend than me.
    
    A couple of my kids have touched my hearts by saying they like that they take after me in certain ways.
    
    And my husband's every word and action makes me feel treasured in too many ways to count. I feel truly blessed.

       Thank you!  You make me remember more things that I have heard!  I do, too, say to people and women (being a woman myself and, no, I am not a homosexual, so if i say it - it's not to to come on to...) - "You are beautiful!!!"

    May I answer with my mother's best compliment?  She said Dad was not given to compliments, so, though she was beautiful, talented, capable, and a bunch of other outstanding things, she was bowled over by this: "Elcy, I'm never bored with you!"

       Probably the best compliment he gave me may or may not have been meant as one. I was about 3 & heard him tell mother:  "She's a very determined little girl!"  That's reassured me for a lifetime: I'm determined!  Daddy said so! A shot of courage!

    For me the best compliment I have ever received was when my step children's grandfather told me I was a better mother than his daughter had ever been. I have raised them for four years now and their ages are 5 to 8 so that was the best compliment ever.

    The best compliment I ever received came years ago from an eighth grade middle school class I was teaching.  We had been going through a rough patch and one day I came into class and one of my students stood up and said the kids should all be thankful to have someone like me for a teacher...and then the entire class stood and applauded.  Imagine that...a standing ovation for a teacher!  I never forgot it and still feel very proud of that moment today.

    I've had complivents from children I've taught, friends, rivals, colleagues. I have relished them all, and occasionally, been humbled, but few have pleased me more than those warm, reassuring words I have heard from my good friend, Svetlana. Svetlana and one or others I have met here.Because from you, my friend, every word is sincere.

       My dear Ian, you are one of a kind - I always felt that you were my TEACHER and a FRIEND at the same time.  Maybe the word MENTOR is better, but I still prefer TEACHER and FRIEND.  I always felt that we were MEANT to meet, even if only in CYBERSPACE!

    It is difficult to choose the best, so I'll rather stick to one special compliment I got from my father. My marriage was all of a sudden (out of the blues) on the rocks. I was kind of tear up by the roots and in the depths of depression. I was with my parents, staring at the barbecue fire, with no idea how I am going to live without my husband. Then my father came to me and said: "Chin up! Don't be afraid. You are tough. You will beat the devil himself." (It was such a compliment as I was never sure about his true opinion of me.)

    I will try to keep this brief. I worked for a newspaper for 13 years and left in 1988. A few years later, the publisher's son threw a surprise party for his "Dad" the publisher. A lot of us old timers were invited to attend and speak.
    
    When the publisher got his turn, he looked into the audience and said me name, the turning to the managing editor that hired me said, "I told (name) the best day's work he ever did was when he hired Larry Wall."
    
    No compliment has come close or will ever come close to that remark.
