What is the saddest song that you know?

We are not so good at identifying our own emotions.  It is said that 36% of the people cannot recognize their emotions when they happen.  Of course, the higher the intensity of the emotion, the higher is the recognition rate.  Can you select three sad songs that range sad, sadder, the saddest? In your own opinion, of course.

From sad to saddest: "To Where You Are" by Josh Groban (inspirational, yet sad), "Broken Vow" by Josh Groban, and "What Hurts The Most" by Rascal Flatts.

Thank you, it really helps to see the different perspective.  I really liked "Broken Vow".  In my own search, I have not come across (yet!) a sadder song than "Caruso" sang by Lara Fabian.

    Hallelujah

There was a time when you let me know
    What's really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Thank you, I really liked this song. I did not find it very sad, on the scale of 1 to 20 (the number of sub-emotions that sadness includes), I'd put it on the 4th place - Blue. Even the sad "Heartbroken" only stands on 12th place, Depressed on 20.

Red Army Blues (The Waterboys) sad song based on truth.

Seasons In The Sun (Terry Jacks, adaptation of Le Moribond by Jack Brel) sadder song.

I am a poor little beggar boy
    My mother she is dead
    My farther is a drunkard
And will not buy me bread
I peep out through the window
    To hear the trumpet sound
And there's my poor old mother
    Dead and in the ground
    Father, father, dig my grave
    Dig it broad and narrow
    Put some roses round me
And let me sleep for ever

I have no idea what it is called or even if it is really a song but my father used to sing it to me when I was a child, why, I don't know but it is the saddest song I have ever heard.

I agree with you, Lara Fabian's Caruso is pretty amazing, but I love her Adagio a lot  as well, she is so unbelievably talented. I am almost jealous :-D
Besides that, Les Miserable has a few amazing sad songs: I dreamed a dream; On my own.
Suzanne Vega's The Queen and The Soldier is pretty sad and haunting, in a different way.....

Adagio is an amazing song and the gift of Fabian is not only her voice but the emotion she can put in her singing, but I think Caruso is sadder because it conveys grief over irreplaceable loss, Adagio has hope, certainty that s/he exists in the world

The saddest songs are usually found  in the Country music side of the music genres. The two that came to mind immediately were:

The Baby - by Blake Sheldon and The House That Built Me by Miranda Lambert if these songs don't bring a tear to your eye you have no feelings.

Only one comes to mind at this moment:
Alone Again Naturally - by Gilbert O'Sullivan...
    (last verse especially)

    ...Looking back over the years
    And whatever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide the tears

    And at sixty-five years old
My mother, God rest her soul
Couldn't understand why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken

    Leaving her to start
With a heart so badly broken
    Despite encouragement from me
    No words were ever spoken

    And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
    Alone again, naturally

As it's getting near Burns night, I'd mention 'Ae fond kiss' as a sad song -
'Ae fond kiss and then we sever - ae fond kiss and then forever'

In Scotland one song in particular is associated with funerals, so much so it has been adopted by the military of other countries, so 'The Flowers of the Forest' would be another suggestion.

The song that always makes me cry is 'We Have All the Time in the World.'  I don't know if it is meant to be a sad song, but it plays an important  part in the James Bond film 'On Her Majesties Secret Service.'  It always reminds me that life is short, and of all the things I didn't say or do, and now can't.
